Operation Market Garden
Published:
On 17th September 1944 the largest ever airborne operation in World War II got under way. Linked to a drive by XXX Corps under General Horrocks, Montgomery's plan was to lay an 'airborne carpet' through which the ground forces could fight their way forward over 60 miles of German-occupied Holland and finish in Arnhem, with a Rhine bridge captured, access to the North German Plain and the Ruhr, and eventually, Berlin.
